Acceptable Use Policy

The rules that keep SMSX safe, lawful, and useful for everyone.

Purpose of the service

SMSX displays publicly shared phone numbers and the messages they receive so visitors can learn how SMS verification and one-time codes work. The numbers shown are public and shared; they are not private lines and should never be treated as confidential.

This Acceptable Use Policy explains what is and is not permitted. By using the website you agree to follow it, alongside our Terms and Conditions. We may update the policy as needed to keep the service safe and lawful.

Permitted use

Most everyday uses of a public SMS directory are welcome:

  • Browsing temporary numbers by country or service to understand what coverage looks like.
  • Reading the sample messages we display to learn how SMS activation and one-time codes are formatted.
  • Testing your own application's message templates, delivery timing, or copy.
  • Research, teaching, and writing about online verification, deliverability, or account security.
  • Reporting content that looks abusive, harmful, or that exposes someone's private information.

Prohibited activity

The following are not allowed under any circumstances. This list describes categories of misuse rather than every possible example.

Unauthorized access and fraud

  • Using the website or any public number to access an account that does not belong to you.
  • Bypassing, testing, or defeating the security controls of any platform, person, or organisation without authorisation.
  • Committing or facilitating fraud, payment abuse, or identity misrepresentation.
  • Impersonating another person, business, or SMSX itself.

Harm to people

  • Harassing, threatening, doxxing, defaming, or endangering anyone.
  • Collecting, republishing, or trading personal information found in public messages.
  • Using the service in connection with content that sexualises minors or promotes violence or illegal activity.

Harm to the service

  • Distributing spam, malware, phishing links, or other harmful code.
  • Automated crawling, scraping, or bulk copying that disrupts the site or reproduces substantial parts of the directory without written permission.
  • Interfering with availability, probing infrastructure, or attempting to reach non-public areas.

Unsafe personal use

Do not rely on these public numbers to receive private codes, financial messages, or any sensitive information intended only for you. Anyone can view messages sent to a public number, and we cannot make such a message private after the fact.

Content standards

We take reasonable steps to hide obvious secrets such as one-time codes and to remove content reported as harmful. Even so, publicly received messages can contain unexpected material, because we do not control what senders transmit.

If you find content that is illegal, exposes private data, or otherwise violates this policy, please report it so we can review and, where appropriate, remove it.

Enforcement

We may restrict access, remove content, rate-limit requests, or take other action we consider appropriate to protect the service and its users. Serious or unlawful activity may be reported to the relevant authorities.

Enforcement is proportionate. A single accidental breach is usually handled by removing the content or limiting a request pattern; deliberate or repeated misuse can result in a permanent block.
